Window repair or replacement: how to evaluate the choice

Some window problems are localized; others involve the opening, frame, repeated moisture, or whole-home comfort goals.

Document the condition

Note difficult operation, broken glass, drafts, stains, visible damage, condensation patterns, and whether the issue affects one opening or many.

Compare the scope

Ask whether a recommendation addresses the sash, glass, frame, flashing, trim, air sealing, and interior or exterior finishes. A replacement product is only part of the installation.

Repair is usually the better starting point when

Replacement is usually worth comparing when

Compare replacement when several windows have the same failure, the frame is deteriorated, water has damaged the opening, or operation and comfort problems persist after practical repairs. Replacement is also a project decision when you want a different opening style or coordinated exterior work. It is not automatically the answer to condensation; indoor humidity, glass temperature, and ventilation can all matter.
